Naples was a major Greek colony, then home of the Roman fleet, capital of five European dynasties: Lombards, Normands, Hoenstaufen, Anjou, Aragona, and the Italian Bourbon kings, until 1860. We can read of this amazing history not only in the monuments, or the old stones, but you in the food, in the language, in the people faces around us. Campania, besides famous Pompei, Capri and Amalfi coast, can be quite a surprise, not only for its rich heritage, spanning from Greek to modern times, but for the real, outgoing southern lifestyle, the healthy and tasty Mediterranean cuisine, and for the wines of course. The inner region, spared by the mainstream tour programs, has a more genuine character, while the more famous locations are definitely less so, but spectacular. This tour combines both things: we start inland, in Sannio, land of traditions and great wines, then we move to Paestum, and eventually the popular Amalfi coast, to Naples, southern kingdom capital for centuries, Capri glamorous, and still impressive, and at last to Pozzuoli and the Flegrean Fields, with their caldera and the Roman monuments.
The many wines, largerly unknown abroad, cover all the range, to satisfy everfy palate: sparkling Asprinio, the fresh whites Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, and then Lachrima Christi, Aglianico, Falerno and Taurasi, reds of increasing power. They boast ancient origins, so that tasting them goes hand in hand with the local history.
